The end

In this essay i'll try to talk about learning english at university. All we know english increases our proffesional perspectives, but sometimes, we didn't do something to work on it. In this text i will make a reflection about my experience in this class. I want you know what is the most difficult things i have to, and what i recommend you.

This year i've start the english course, in level 3, pre intermediate. That was a very difficult term, because i have to be compatible with the television classes, than demands me a big time. Anyway, the class helps me to get back my english level, because i didn't practice grammar, telling and speaking al least for three years. This second term i've continue in level intermediate, learning grammar, vocabulary and blog writting.

Working in blogs was very good, because it helps me to apply gramar and make a style of english writting. But sometimes, i was bored of being in front of the screen, with my hands on the keyboard. But i knew it was for good. In the begining, it was not easy. I have to wrote about people i admire, the vacations, festivities, technology, friends and more. But each weak i was increasing my vocabulary and fluency of writing.

It really helps me to enjoy the learning of english, especially when i tried to write without translating. It was very good. I think it has many advantages. Telling stories is allways a good way to increasing the grammar, wording and phrasing. That's the way the journalist teachers use to helps us improve our style and, in my opinion, it works very good in this class.

So, i think it's not enough. I think it will be better if we do more activities of speaking too. The same we do in blogs, we could do it in the class, speaking in a circle, trading oppinions and visions of the world. I think It could be a good way to meet to the classmates of other grades or career and, of course, learn together.

Wasteland or greenland?

I think there aren’t enought official ways to learn about enveromentally friendly practices. The people who takes care of this topics, learn about it on documentary movies, classes in the university, or, maybe, television spots.

I have incorported recycling into my habits, as reducing the plastic bags, using a clog bag to go to the supermarket, or reuse the plastic bags I have on my kitchen. I put the fruits or vegetable waste in a hole in my courtyard; the waste is eaten for bugs who improve the ground quality. And, I separate in different bags the papers and the carboard.

I don’t use a bike in Santiago, because is too big and I haven’t a bike here. In Rengo, mi city of birth, I have one, and I use it to move to my friend’s houses, the river, or the different places I want t go.

- Have you joined or supported any eco-organisations? Why/Why not?

I haven’t joined or supported any eco-organisations, because I’ haven’t enough time or money to joined in one. I prefer do little things, at least on this topic, or in this time.

But I remember I helped to the huascoaltinos people in a video. I do the phrase of the explanatory video of the reasons they have to reject the Pascua Lama mining proyect. I think this is the best way I can help in the cause, using my habilities.

- What have you done to reduce your
carbon footprint?

I turn off all the light, tv, computer, microwave and all the electrical items I not use, and I encourage my friends to do it. I use lights of low consume too. I use public transport, or I just walk and I recycle bags and the water of my laundry (it’s very benefical for plants, because it has phosphate)

You may calculate your carbon footprint here

- What's missing in our society/Santiago regarding this issue?

It think we need to improve the information programs. It’s very easy reducing our carbon footprint, but the people prefer stay on their comfortable way. But we can change this with more education in the schools, university, work and media

Cholera in Haiti

Haiti, one of the poorest countries of america, is afected by cholera. Acoording of a multinacional relief, the epidemic has killed 250 people in one week, and infected 3 thousands more.

The cholera infected people easily, bacause the bactery can be transmitted by water. It produces vomiting and watery diarrhoea. If its not threated promptly, the people infected could die.

Specialist believed the source of the epidemic should stay on the Artibonite river. They are affraid the infection arrive to the Capital , Port-au-Prince.

“The most important thing is to isolate the cholera patients there from the rest of the patients…to prevent further spread od the disease” says Federica Nagaroto, of Médicins Sans Fronteries, one of the organizations who Works for controling the outbreak.

The epidemy of cholera in Haiti is a consequence of the earthquake in january of this year. The ground moviments destroyed the country and leaving one million of people homeles, in precarious housing and hygiene conditions.

"Rabia": a great (but unknown) chilean movie

Today, i’ll write about the movie i see last weekend. This is Rabia, a chilean film of Oscar Cárdenas. This is not my favourite movie, but i really like it.

Camila Sepúlveda is a young and qualifyed woman, but she is unemployed. She has been looking for a job for one year, but she couldn’t find one. In the movie, Camila goes to many interviews, then, she has to compite against other womans for one place to work. Some of then, are very qualyfied, others, are prettier, or have some influences.”Pituto”, in the chilean vocabulary.

One year is too much time, but Camila is resigned. Her secretary courses and willigness to Work, are not enought. She is angry, she feels rage against the sistem, the limited opportunities, the daily routine, the life. But she still trying, everyday, taking care of presentation and the words she uses. Why do you think you could’t find a work? A man asked her. Lucky, she says.

“Rabia” is an interesting movie, because it helps us to reflect about our society, our relationship with work (sometimes, it seams we live for work, not work for live). Oscar Cárdenas, director and writter, uses the improvisation of actors to shows us natural dialogs and reactions. He uses an intimal camera, very close, to shows the actor’s impressions.

The movie has been filmed in just two days, wih two Mine DV cameras (the same you should use to recording birthday parties, or somethin else) and a seven people staff. This is part of the director’s astuteness, on use the minimal resourses to obtain great outputs.

In Fact, the movie was recieved a good critical and was presented in many cinema festivals around the World.

I really recommend you. You can find it on Icei’s library, for free.

"The Big Bang Theory", the best

Do you remember “The revenge of nerds”?. Today, I'll don't write about this movie, but l'll do it about one of my favourite tv programs. This is “The Big Bang Theory”.

This is sitcom, but is more than jokes and voices of people laughing when the characters tells something funny. Sheldon and Leonard are two phisicist who lives toghether. They likes to play interactive games, colecting comics and eating tai food. They are nerds, loosers, or geek people if you want.

One day, a beautiful girl called Penny arrive to the front of their house. She is is an aspiring actress trying to forget her last relationship. They are very different, but they have to live together. They have to share the laundry, the stairs, the air.

Each episode shows the situations they lives. The personalities of the characters are very diferent, each one is very special. In the episodes they have to share with Sheldon and Leonard's friends, Raj and Wollowitz, an indian and jewish man respectively. They are very special too.

I like the serie because it's very funny. The episodes are no longer of 20 minutes, and you can join to the serie in the episode you want, because it has no continuity. You will not see the clasic “to be continued...”, not yet. But i recommend you start from the first episode, because you could see the changes of the caracters during the seasons. The Big Bang Theory started in 2007, and it has four seasons. The last begin in september.

My favourite character is Sheldon. He is a highly gifted man. He is cinical, and he loves show to the other people his talents. The character, portrayed by actor Jim Parsons, has an exceptional humor, and sometimes remember me “Mr Bean”, one of my favourite tv character.

If you want to laugh or got 20 minutes of relax, a good way is watch this serie. You can do it in Warner Channel or download it, like me.

I discovered Los caballeros del Zodiaco when i was seven years old. My cousin Vicente watched it because his parents paid for having more tv channels on their house. I loved went to his house to played with him, and watched more episodes of the cartoon.

Los Caballeros del Zodiaco tells the story of five young boys. They have to defend Saori, the Atenea's greek goddess reincarnation, who arrive to the earth each time when the human race be in problems.

The cartoon has three main parts: The battle of the Sactuary, Asgard and Poseidon. They have to overcome themselves to defeat all their enemies.

I liked when the characters fought with their enemies, specially when they won. I like the stories of the characters too. But i love the begin of each episode, with the presentation and the sumary. The presenter has a strong voice.

Please, watch this video. His voice is the best!

Now, fifteen years later, i still loving the cartoon. I've just download the Asgard part, my favourite, for watching on my DVD player. I think Los Caballeros del Zodiaco is a great cartoon. It's more than people with superpowers. It's full of good stories. It's helps you to reflect about the friendship, humility, the peace and more.

I don’t love Santiago, but i like it. I arrived to this city four years ago, when I begin to study journalism in the Universidad de Chile. I moved from Rengo, a city near of Rancagua, in the sixth region.

When I arrived to Santiago, I believed there’s impossible to found beautiful places, but I was wrong. So, now I will tell you about my most beautiful and interesting place to visit in Santiago.

You have to visit the Saint Cristobal hill. It’s near of Plaza Italia, an important point of reference in this city.

This is the biggest urban green area in the world, an area of 722 hectares. There you can find a great variety of vegetation, places to make eat something, or to take a look of the city (I recommend you do it after of a rainy day, because the sky is cleaner). If you like to practice sports, it’s a great place to make running or moving on your bicycle. If you like the animals, you can go to the metropolitan zoo, and if you like to swim you can visit the Tupahue and Antilen swimming pool.

The Saint Cristobal hill is near of the Baquedano subway station. Then, you have to walk for Pio Nono Street. You can climb up for the roads, or you can do it in a car, or in the railway.

If you want to have some fun, I recommend you to visit Bellavista. It’s between the Saint Cristobal hill and the Plaza Italia. There are a great variety of places to drink or eat something, to dance. You can find an option according to your money, music you like, or people you want to meet. Another places you should visit are the Brazil and Ñuñoa’s city square.

I could be writing for hours about the places I like of Santiago, but I prefer you found your own. Come on, let’s go!

My first term: academic life

The first term of 2010 was exhausting in the University. But I learned many things. First, I’ve learnt to work for television. I’ve had to do news, to speak in front to the camera (with many people disturbing me), and I’ve had to do a TV program with my classmates. That was a talk show with week’s news. It was a big work, because we had to do the news, make the set, lights and decoration design, and we had to operate the cameras and switch control too. Personally, I was the producer, so I had to keep everything was ok, in the time we have been estimated. Fortunately, the TV program was realized, and we had a good mark and comments.

I had to take classes of multimedia journalism, of communication in organizations, investigation methodology, Communication theory, and English classes too.

It was not easily, because I had to work making news for a radio station, and many times I had to make it in 45 minutes! It means call and takes at least two comments of politicians, academicians or NGO’s people; write the text, record it, make a mix of my phrase and the words of my interviewers, and send It to my producer by email. It’s like a marathon, but I like it so much.

I have new classes and things to do this term, but I hope everything will be ok. I had no time to make sports, but now i'm recovering the time i've lost.

My future...uhm

In the future i want to be a good Jounalist. This is the reason why i'm studying this degree and i'm giving my best.

I want to work in Bio Bio Radio Station. I allways want to do it, because i think its a good place to make news, in a critical way. But before, i want to do many things. One of this is travel. I want to move to different places, countries, working in many things that lend me enjoy the travel.

I would like visit Canada, Italy and Spain. I could work as waiter, pizza deliverer, or shop assistant.

Later, i want to come back to Chile, to share my experiences with family and friends, and try to get a job as journalist. Then, i will hardworking to get my objetive. I would like to take a master in Cultural Studies too.

It's obviously, but i want a love partner who loves me. Just this. I don't need a supermodel, or the smartest person in the world, i need a person who makes me company, understands me, and loves me.

I don't know if i wants to have a family. I'm sure i won't have it now, but i don't know what i will think about it in the future. If i have childens, i would don't like to have more than two. I have no some patience.

I would like live in Valparaíso, or in a city near the sea. I don't like the cities as Santiago, over popupated, with contamination and no some green areas. I like to enjoy the city i live.

I would like to have a good life, with good health, job and the company of the people i love. I think i have it in the pressent, but i want to keep it in the future.

My favourite photograph

“La Chilindrina y el Chapulín Colorado” is the name of this photograph. My mother took it, and wrote the name on this back side.

It was taken about in 1990, when I was 2 years old. It shows me and my sister, wearing as the “Chapulin Colorado” and Chilindrina, respectively. They was characters of a tv program called “El show de Chespirito” (Chespirito’s show). The Chapulin Colorado was a clumsy superheroe, who helps people in problems. He was wearing a yellow bokers over his red pants, red t-shirt, and red hat too. He had a something like a radar dish on the hat. It makes him hear the people who needed him. In the photograph I appeared wearing like him, but I have no hat, no bokers and I had the radar dish in my hands.

My sister looking like the Chilindrina, a character of another Chespirito’s program called “El Chavo del ocho” (Something like “The boy of the eighth house”. I don’t know if it has a official translation). Chilindrina was a friend of the Chavo del ocho, and she was a crybaby children.

I like this photograph because it shows us as we are. Me, pretentious, and she, very cheeky. My mother told me this is a casual photograph. We were just playing; we are not preparing to go to a fancy dress party.

I got the original photo in my Santiago’s room (I have another in Rengo, in the house of my parents), it’s on my wall with another photos of my family and friends. I make a copy of this to share with my sister, family and friends. This is the photograph you can see on this post.

Is the Capital Punishment is a good solution to reduce criminality?

No way. I don't think Capital Punishment is a good solution to reduce criminality because it just punishes people, but it is not a way to prevent it.

I think it is an easy and fast way to reduce the criminal population, this could be the pros. But it is not the solution. I think the crimes could be reduced if the goverment makes serious programs of rehabilitation and education to the people who commit crimes. Another way to do it, I think, it must to be make a change of mind: build a society collaborative and friendlier than ours, with more justice and equality of opportunities.

In Santiago is possible reduce crimes, but we don’t need capital punishment, prisons, hide cameras and thousands of police man on the streets. The government has to give good jobs, an excellent public education, and build parks. It means, improve the quality of the citizen’s life. The happy people don’t commit crimes.

The increasing of criminality in Chile is not absolutely real. Of course there are crimes, but Chile is not a dangerous country. “La Guerra y la Paz Ciudadana” is a investigation of the journalist Marcela Ramos and Juan Guzmán de Luigi that describes how the mass communication media, the political and the businessman has been work to shape the delinquency as the most important problem to the population.

Consequences of this construction are the Chilean people are the most victimize of Latin America, but, paradoxically, Chile is the safest country of the continent according research.

The Christmas

May favourite festivity is Christmas. I like it because it’s a time to join with all my family.

Every year it’s the same. We arrive to my granmother’s house with fruits, vegetables, fish, chiken, to make a big, big dinner. We start to prepare the food at 5 o clock, then, we can ready to sit and enjoy the food at half past nine.

Later, we do a long alter-dinner, and we got time to speak and tell jokes. My younger cousins are very ansiuss, waiting the arrival of the “Viejito pascuero” (he is not Santa Claus). In a quarter to 12, the midnight, the cousins go my grunny’s room. There, we turn off the lights and start to sings christmas carols, like “Noche de paz” and “Pobre Rodolfo el Reno”. But, the favourites is a adaptation of a popular and picaresque Hiroito’s song called “Viejito Lolero”, that we rename “Viejito, viejo Pascuero”.

When december 25th arrive, the Viejito Pascuero pass near the window and says “JO-JO-JO”. My younger cousins cry and feel they are in the paradise. The olders, just laugh.

Finally, they go to see the prices he gift. Sometimos the Viejito Pascuero gets they the right present. Sometimos, he’s wrong and my cousins cries. The olders not receive some gifts: we know the christmas is more than this.

The best piece of technology!

Obviously, my favorite piece of technology is the cell phone. Nothing can be compared with it. It’s simple to use: you open it (it’s a clamshell model), dial the number of the person you want to connect, and press the green key. That’s it!

I use it everyday, every time I can.

I got my first mobile when i was 15 years old. My parents were given me as a Christmas gift. It was bigger and heavier, it has a green screen, and sounds like a xylophone, but i loved it. I had it during two years, until two boys robed it to me.

I have had different kinds of cell phones. There was simple, no much expensive, but so much useful. Now I have a Samsumg model, with camera, voice recorder and mp3 player. Oh, I forget it: i have many minutes to speak too. Everything that a journalist could to need. That’s why i like it.

It’s difficult thinking my life without it, but I think I can do it. I could use the Public Phone, or go directly my friend’s house, and I could use my CD player. But I really prefer to have all in one piece, and this is my cell phone.

My dear friend

I have two best friends, Afro y Salva. I meeted they in the same place: the school. I love they. But this time, i tell you about Salvador because the last time i have to described a friend, i do it with Afrodita (Yes, this is her name).

I meeted him ten years ago. It was in march, in the first day of class. I was the new classmate, and he receive me.

He was wearing glasses, school clothes and he had a book of Jesus on his hands. He looked like a good boy, pacient, smart. But i was absolutely confused. On the contrary of the appearances, he was one of the worst students of the class: he liked to play jokes, he never peaked atention to the teacher, and he said bad words. His talent was the actuation, and he used to looked like an angel to the rest of the people.

I want to act too, so, we became friends easily. If we have to comapare to someone, i said we are like Pinky & Brain. He was always wrong, he comited thousands of mistakes, like Pinky, and i'm reflexive, sometimes machiavellian, like Brain. We are so diferent, and this is really funny. We like the same things, the same music, places, drinks, but we enyoy in different ways.

In this years we visited many places as Pichilemu, Las Docas, Puerto Savedra, Puerto Varas, Puerto Montt, and more. This winter we want to go to the Valle del Elqui, in the fourth region.

Now, we are not in the same place. I'm in Santiago studying journalism and he is in Valparaíso, studying actuation. When he can, he visited me, and when i can, i go to Valparaíso. But we preffer to join when we go to Rengo, our city, the place we have growing together.

Martín Caparrós, the best

Martín is a writter, but he writes as a journalist. He is a member of the New Journalism's tendency, born in 1960 in the United States. Básically, the journalist tryed to told the issues as a novel, using the style of the fiction to describe the reality.

Martín Caparrós was born in argentina in 1957, and he starded in the journalism at seventeen years old, in "Noticias" newspaper. Three years later, in 1976, he has sent to exile to Francia. He studied History in París, and later, he goes to Spain, the place he wrotes his first novel.

In 1991, he come back to Argentina, and he begin to write articles of travels. Then, he start to bacame famous, and he published his first book of journeys, called "Crónicas de fin de Siglo"

I knew his talent in 2006. My Fathers gitf his novel "Valfierno" to my sister, as a Chrismas gift. So, i took it, and i start to read it.

It was amazing, Cararrós told the story of a argentinian man who steal the Mona Lisa in 1911. The character has a problem of multiple personalities, one of them, is "Valfierno" a count obsessed in womans.

The novel is exciting, and it was a perfect excuse to keep reading Martín Caparrós’s books and articles. I’m not a fan, but I really like his narratives.

La Habana city. Beauty and wonderful

La Havana city is located in Cuba, in the caribbean sea. La Habana has no any facilities, because there is another economic model, called comunism. The people have no some money, but they have education, heath, food and house for free. The people are happy with this, and they don't like the American way of life. At least, the people i meet.

The internet, the cars, the luxury is expensive. But the food, books, handycrafts are cheaper. I don't think La Habana needs some facilities. This is the spirit of the city.

I traveled to La Habana in 2009 because i assisted to the Latinoamerican congress of comunication faculty. I traveled with ten of my classmates, and students of the University of Concepción, Católica of Concepción University and Universidad de las Américas. We went to Varadero too, and we stayed on a resort all inclusive. That was so funny!

I want to go back to Cuba, because i want to visit La Habana again, and i want to know Santa Clara, Playa Girón and Santiago de Cuba.

The day of the earthquake

I've just arrived to Pichilemu beach. I were with my mom, dad and my uncle Paulina. This night i was joined with my fried Ignacio, who stayed on the beach too.
In the night we were walking to the center and looking a place to go party. But, finally, we decided to go home.

We buy some drinks and go to the house's terrace. My parents go to sleep and me, Paulina e Ignacio stayed drinking, talking and looking the beatiful moon on the sky. Suddenly, the ground stars to move. We were taking aur arms and try to calm down together. This is a earthquake, we thought. Yes it is.

When the earthquake ends, we took the bags, the drinks, foods and we go to Cerro La Cruz, the security zone of Pichilemu. Away of the beach, away of the tsunami risk.

The hill was full of people, all scared. We've go to the Igancio's uncle, because he has a house on the top hill. The house was full of people too. But all toghether, we waited for it gets light.
